Father's Day: Origin & gift ideas

Father’s Day is celebrated in many countries. But where does it come from?

The idea of celebrating fathers originated in the United States in 1910. Sonora Louise SMART DODD and her five brothers and sisters were raised solely by their father after their mother passed away. Sonora Louise then decided to campaign for the creation of a day dedicated to honouring fathers across the United States. The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1909 in several states, before becoming a national celebration in the United States in 1924.

In France, Father’s Day was first introduced by a commercial lighter brand before being officially recognised in 1952. Every year, Father’s Day takes place on the 3rd Sunday of June (except in rare cases linked to the date of Easter). This year, we will therefore celebrate fathers and fathers-to-be on Sunday, June 21, 2015.
