For the luckiest among you, the destination will be somewhere sunny. Pure bliss! We’re already dreaming of beautiful sandy beaches and glorious sunshine, and the current grey weather suddenly seems far away!
Before you leave, though, a trip takes a little preparation! And for a pregnant woman, it is always useful to know about the possible effects of sun exposure during pregnancy.
First of all, let’s agree on one thing: sunshine can be a wonderful boost for our mood, including during pregnancy. It’s well known that people generally feel more relaxed and cheerful on sunny days, so a holiday in the sun can certainly lift your spirits.
However, pregnancy changes your body, and unusual reactions to sun exposure may occur. Our advice for your holiday: be extra careful and don’t forget your sunscreen!
Melasma, also known as the “pregnancy mask”, is one possible reaction during pregnancy. It involves hyperpigmentation of certain areas of the face and neck following sun exposure. Dark brown patches may appear and can sometimes persist for several months after giving birth.
Be careful with varicose veins too, as heat can aggravate feelings of heavy legs and circulation problems, which may already be more noticeable during pregnancy.
To help protect yourself during your holiday, remember to:
- Avoid sun exposure between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- Use high-protection sunscreen
- Avoid prolonged sun exposure
- Wear a hat
- Remember to stay well hydrated
And the perfect addition to your sunny holiday: our maternity swimwear. Made from beautiful Italian fabrics, our maternity swimsuits provide UPF 50+ UV protection, offering additional protection for you and your skin.
