World Breastfeeding Week

Semaine Mondiale de l'Allaitement Maternel

The World Breastfeeding Week 2015 began on Monday, October 12 and ended on Sunday, October 18.

What is World Breastfeeding Week?

World Breastfeeding Week has been organised since 1992 by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA). During this period, organisations and individuals can support, protect and encourage breastfeeding. The organisation promotes a simple principle: breastfeeding is a right of women and children. It also aims to raise awareness of the importance of breastfeeding for a child’s development.

Why breastfeed?

First of all, the decision to breastfeed is a personal choice that only the mother can make. Beyond nutrition, breastfeeding can strengthen the bond between mother and baby and create special moments of closeness.

Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for around the first 6 months to support healthy growth and development. Breast milk contains antibodies and provides newborns with nutrients that contribute to their health.

From a practical point of view, breastfeeding requires little preparation in advance: milk is generally readily available and at the right temperature. Breast milk is also economical and environmentally friendly. It is a natural resource.

It can also benefit mums!

Breastfeeding has been associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer and certain ovarian cancers. Some studies have also linked it to benefits for maternal bone health. Breastfeeding may also support postpartum weight loss, while some research has explored possible associations with maternal mental health after birth.

Breastfeeding can also help the uterus contract after birth, which may reduce postpartum bleeding. Its effects can vary depending on each woman’s health and individual circumstances.
